This is the sheet music for a gigue by Georg Muffat (1653-1704), for string quintet with optional harpsichord continuo. It is typical of Muffat’s most important work, a collection of suites in the French style.

Born in Savoy of Scottish descent, he studied in Paris and Rome, but spent much of his life in various parts of the German-speaking world.

His music is historically important because it helped to introduce French and Italian styles to central Europe, but it also has charm in its own right.

A new complete edition of the 50-movement Florilegium Primum, from which this gigue is taken, will be available later this year from www.ourtext.co.uk
